Accessing Ijams

Ijams is committed to providing amazing outdoor experiences for people of all ages and abilities. We have launched a series of new initiatives to expand accessibility at Ijams. By working closely with industry experts and community members, we hope to become the most accessible park in Knoxville.

Visitor Center
A brand new, handicap-accessible path is currently being installed in front of our Visitor Center. The new path will provide a smooth surface for visitors with mobility challenges. The path extends from the handicap parking spaces to the front door. Ijams is working with Acadia Landscape to make this pathway possible.

Field Trips
We are fortunate to have access to the wonderful Greenway system that connects the parks in Knoxville and Knox County. This paved trail provides a terrific surface for wheelchairs, walkers, and canes. In addition, the Universal Trail is named because it is universally accessible by anyone, regardless of mobility challenges. During school field trips we are able to take advantage of these trails for guided hikes to ensure that all students can fully participate in programming.

Boat Dock
Ijams is in the process of permitting to provide visitors access to the Tennessee River from a handicap-accessible canoe and kayak launch. Through an EZ Launch® System, users will have a an easy way to launch and dock kayaks and canoes – great for people with disabilities, children or seniors. Users will feel confident transferring into their watercraft independently and securely, and launching with stability and ease.
