Mead’s Quarry (approximately 1890)

(Ages 10 and up) In the early 1900s, Knoxville was known as Marble City because of all the Tennessee Marble exported from local quarries but today those quarrying operations are largely gone. In the past 20 years, Ijams took over the management responsibilities of two of those former working quarries: Mead’s and Ross Marble. On this History Hike, Ijams senior naturalist Stephen Lyn Bales will visit all four quarry pits and talk about their history.
