Goldfish have taken over the Lotus Pond, and we need your help! Goldfish make great pets, but they are considered an invasive species to our East Tennessee ecosystem. When non-native species are released at our nature center, they can wreak havoc on the environment. These goldfish can spread disease and parasites, which can decimate native aquatic species. Invasive fish also can take over food, nesting, and shelter resources, which can have disastrous effects on the pond ecosystem.

That’s where you come in! Ijams Nature Center is hosting a Goldfish Roundup in order to find these fish a new home. Bring your family and friends anytime from 2-5 on March 3rd to catch your new family pet. We will provide bait, nets, and a little coaching for participants. Feel free to catch and take as many as you like. If you do not wish to take a Goldfish home, that’s okay! Still come out and catch as many as you can. We will find homes for the other fish. Right now the most important thing is to catch as many as possible and remove them from our pond.

  • This event is for all ages, and is free to attend; no registration is required for this event.
  • Please check in at the Visitor Center when you arrive.
  • There isn’t enough room at the pond for everyone at once; you will be assigned a time to fish when you check in.
  • You do not need to arrive right at 2 pm; you are welcome to attend any time within the 2 pm – 5 pm window.
