(Recommended for adults) This October, Ijams Nature Center will kick off a new series of MEMBERS ONLY, monthly hikes that explore areas beyond Ijams’ borders with nature expert Ken Voorhis, who recently retired from his position of chief operations and education officer from Yellowstone Forever, the nonprofit education and philanthropic partner of Yellowstone National Park.

This month, Ken will be leading a hike around Cucumber Gap Loop, which is a beautiful and gentle hike for an October day. The loop begins in Elkmont at the head of the Little River trail. You’ll travel along the Little River on an old roadbed until cutting off on the Cucumber Gap trail. The next stage will take you up to Cucumber Gap through a beautiful cove hardwood forest, across a few minor streams and back to Elkmont. You’ll walk down the main street of the former “Daisy Town” and imagine what life was like for those who spent time there in the early 1900s. This is a great hike for enjoying the sounds and views of Little River, identifying trees, possibly finding a few salamanders, and learning some of the history behind the former town of Elkmont.

Ken is an educator, naturalist and leader committed to connecting people and nature for 40 years, and served as executive director of Great Smoky Mountains Institute at Tremont from 1984 to 2013. Ken has been a voice and leader on a national level, helping to build capacity for in-depth learning programs in national parks. He is also an avid photographer, storyteller, writer, and musician, and enjoys many outdoor pursuits including hiking, canoeing, skiing, birding, botanizing and exploring out-of-the-way, wild places. Ken has a great sense of humor, so you know you’ll learn a lot and have a great time!

All hikes will meet at the trailhead. Specific directions, packing instructions, etc., will be sent upon registration. Hikes occur rain or shine and will have a maximum of 15 people, so early registration is strongly encouraged. You must be a current member of Ijams Nature Center to be eligible to register.
