Internship opportunities for 2007-08

Gain Practical teaching experience, further your knowledge of the natural world, work in an outdoor setting, and develop useful skills in a non-profit setting . . . become an intern at East Tennessee’s Premier Environmental Education Center.

Ijams Nature Center, located in Knoxville, Tennessee, is seeking enthusiastic, energetic individuals with a love of the outdoors to assist us in fulfilling our mission to develop and maintain the park as a wildlife sanctuary, to increase knowledge, understanding, and appreciation of the natural world, and provide quality environmental educational programs and nature-related experiences.

Ijams Nature Center Interns assist the staff with environmental education programs, participate in special Ijams events and functions, and complete an approved independent project.

 

2007 – 2008 Internship Opportunities

                                   

ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION INTERNSHIPS (CAMP)

June through July                 

Two (2) 250 hour internship

$1750 stipend* + college credit (where applicable) Applications accepted until positions filled. Become a camp leader for Ijams’ Nature Day Camps. Week-long day camps open to Children ages 6 – 14.  Camps are held at Ijams Nature Center from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.  Summer interns will also facilitate two overnight camp sessions.  Required completion of approved independent project required.  Other duties as assigned.

 

                                   

ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION INTERNSHIP (FIELD GUIDES)

September through December      

110 hour internship

$770 stipend* + college credit (where applicable) Become a naturalist for Ijams onsite school programs, as well as school outreach programs, and other special events. Specific hours of the day requirement (9 a.m. – 11 a.m. and/or 11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. TWTF).  Assist with live animal programs. Completion of approved independent project required. Other duties as assigned. Flexible distribution of hours.

 

 

ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION INTERNSHIP (FIELD GUIDES)

January through May   

110 hour internship

$770 stipend* + college credit (where applicable)

Become a naturalist for Ijams onsite school programs, as well as school outreach programs, and other special events. Specific hours of the day requirement (9 a.m. – 11 a.m. and/or 11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. TWTF).  Assist with live animal programs. Completion of approved independent project required. Other duties as assigned. Flexible distribution of hours.

 

 

GREENHOUSE EDUCATION INTERNSHIP

September through may   

400 hour internship

$2800 stipend* + college credit (where applicable)

Greenhouse& organic garden management. Including but not limited to propagating native species, community and school garden programming, garden-site plan implementation, preparation for Annual Native Plant Sale. Required completion of approved independent project. Other duties as assigned. Flexible distribution of hours.

 

*Stipends are available on a competitive basis, pending completion of internship. Program is non-residential. Interns must provide own transportation.

 

Requirements: Enrolled in an accredited college or university with course work pursuant to a degree in the above fields OR BS/BA in environmental education, elementary/secondary education, biology, environmental science or related fields; interest in nature, natural history and the outdoors; strong verbal and written communications skills; experience or interest in environmental education program development and facilitation; demonstrated teaching experience a plus; child abuse/criminal record clearances; First Aid/CPR certification helpful.
