Annual Earth Flag Banquet celebrates school year

Saturday June 23, 2007
Awards given for a job well done

The Earth Flag Banquet on April 27 was a wonderful celebration of the time and energy that the participating schools have given toward this very meaningful program. The Banquet was held at Ijams Nature Center where 24 schools and their guests enjoyed hors d'oeuvres and music played by Nancy Fitzpatrick.

Ijams and Knox County Solid Waste are very proud of all of the schools that participate in the program and wish to congratulate each of them individually for their dedication to the earth. Throughout the month of April nominations were received for awards in eleven categories honoring those who have gone above and beyond the call of duty for the program. The awards ceremony honored the winners of each of the eleven categories. The winners are: Best School Award: Belle Morris Elementary; Best Composting Program: Pond Gap Elementary; Best Earth Flag Teacher: Kristy Roop at Adrian Burnett Elementary; Best Re-leafing project: Fort Craig Elementary; Best Custodial Staff member: Henry Walling at Pond Gap Elementary; Best Recycling Program: Alpha Elementary; Best Environmental Club: Adrian Burnett Environmental Club; Volunteer of the year: Valerie Horrocks at Fairview Elementary; Lifetime Achievement Award: Linda Denton at Gresham Middle School; Best Cafeteria Staff: Fountain City Elementary Cafeteria; Best Reduce and Reuse project: Holly Briggs at Moorland Heights Elementary.

Congratulations to all the Earth Flag Schools for their hard work in environmental education and conservation this school year! Thank you so much to all that attended and congratulations to all the winners of Earth Flag awards!

Keep up the great work!
