Drainpipe turbine wins award

Best conservation project sponsored by Ijams

When it rains, the water flows down the gutter and its energy is lost. Well, not for Eleanor Tant, who won the Best Conservation Project sponsored by Ijams Nature Center at the 2008 Tate's Annual Regional Science Fair. Eleanor, a student at Knoxville Montessori School, created a small paddle-wheel to fit in her home's gutter. When water flows, the small turbine generates enough electricity to charge a battery.

Congratulations Eleanor!
