Waste audit produces surprises

Saturday June 14, 2008
Too much recyclable/reusable items thrown away

On April 14, Paul James, the Earth Flag Team and many others along with myself participated in a dumpster waste audit sponsored and led by Knox County Solid Waste. A dumpster was emptied on the ground and then we basically picked through the food scraps, cat litter, and potentially hazardous materials.

The purpose of this madness was to get a better idea how much recyclable/reusable materials were being thrown away. Some of the most astonishing things found were two bags of aluminum cans, endless pieces of cardboard, unopened children's toys, good clothing, weed eater parts and other tools. We can reduce our waste by recycling and donating unwanted items to Goodwill or the Ijams' annual Yard Sale. Remember to reduce, reuse and recycle.
