Ijams nature walk to discuss book's flora and fauna

During October, the YWCA of Knoxville and Knox County Public Library will once again be sponsoring The Big Read. This year's read is John Steinbeck's "The Grapes of Wrath," a novel that won the Pulitzer prize for literature.

In the 1939 book, the harsh depression era conditions of the 1930s forced the Joad family to sell most of their possessions and migrate 2,000 miles from Oklahoma to California to start a new life.

On Sunday, October 26 at 1 p.m., Ijams naturalist and local author Stephen Lyn Bales will lead a symbolic migration along the Will Skelton Greenway to the land of opportunity (Ijams Nature Center). Along the way he'll discuss flora and fauna both in the Tennessee Valley and the book. To make the walk even more memorable, period attire is suggested. Free. For more info or to sign up call Sheila at 577-4717, ext. 10.
