Come Take a Walk at Ijams

Thursday March 16, 2006
If you're looking for company on your stroll or someone to tell you what you can find on a walk on our trails, read this story.

With the beginning of Spring, it's time to get back outside! If you don't already walk our trails on a regular basis, I encourage you to start. Our trails are at the river, in the forest, by ponds and gardens, and even around a rock quarry. We have trails that are paved or mulched, and are for everyone. If you are up for a challenge, try the quarry trail. You'll feel better and you never know what you might see!  In the past, we've seen otters playing in the river (ask me about the otter with the football), a bald eagle flying by (being watched by a great blue heron flying underneath), a fox running away from us, a mute swan from the overlook, turtles, frogs, rabbits, and much more. If you are new to this area, it’s a good way to find out  what kind of animals you might see in your backyard.

To help you get started, come out any Saturday, starting March 11th, at 1:30 p.m. and take a walk with us!  The walks are free to everyone and are for all ages.  Every Saturday we will take a different trail. These are very informal walks, but we’ll show you some interesting things (it always helps to be able to identify poison ivy or stinging nettles).  We will be back in time for the free weekly animal presentation at 3 p.m.  No need to call ahead. Just meet us in the lobby of the Visitor Center.
Don't forget our Visitor Center is open now on Sundays from 1 - 5 p.m.  You don't need to go all the way to the Smokies to spend the day walking and enjoying nature.
Ijams’ trails are open every day from 8 a.m. until dusk.
