Living Clean & Green! gets a polishing

Tuesday January 02, 2007
Join us for First Friday on Market Square for the re-launch of Ijams' Living Clean & Green programs! Read about it here!

Living Clean & Green! is a series of urban environmental programs that outline issues facing our community, how we impact those issues and what, as individuals, we can do to lighten the load we place on the environment. Often, these problems can seem overwhelming and lead one to wonder, “what can I possibly do to help?” In truth, there are many simple lifestyle choices you can make that will help revitalize our local environment. Living Clean & Green! programs demonstrate easy ways to work these earth-friendly practices into your daily life. Since its inception in 2002, the program has helped more than 11,000 participants do just that.
    Thanks to
new sponsorship from Knox County and the Alcoa Foundation, Ijams has reworked and supplemented these programs to be even more fun, informative and environmentally relevant. We’ve improved the workshops we already had and are now offering new topics.  Also due to the generous support from our sponsors, we are able to offer Living Clean & Green! programs for absolutely free. All workshops are about an hour long and can be presented at most locations; they’re perfect for church groups, clubs or other organizations. Some of the newly reworked programs are now available to middle and high school students, as well. Living Clean & Green!, in its new, improved form, will be re-launched in the New Year. We’ll celebrate the re-launch on Market Square during First Friday (January 5). Also, be sure to look out for new media coverage, featuring Heartland Series host Bill Landry, courtesy of WBIR TV Channel 10.   The topics of the newly reworked Living Clean & Green! programs are as follows:

Let’s Take a Walk

Wetlands

Recycling/Trash to Treasure Workshop

The Air We Breathe

Trees

Can You Hear the Frogs?

What Makes a Healthy Creek

Butterflies Are Free

Creating a Green Household

Bird Friendly Yard

Organic Gardening

Urban Wildlife

Wildscaping

Know Your Watershed

Gathering Seeds

Central to the topic of air quality lies the use of Ijams’ Toyota Prius hybrid vehicle. At an average 45 miles per gallon, hybrid technology is an effective choice for reducing gas consumption, especially in urban environs.  For the re-launch of Living Clean & Green!, our current hybrid vehicle will be transformed into a unique mobile billboard, by way of a complete body wrap. In essence, the vehicle, wrapped in clear blue skies and white clouds, will become a memorable Living Clean & Green! Machine. Look out for it on the roads, starting in January. The car is often on display at Ijams on Saturdays for visitors to take a look and learn about alternative energy.
