Frequently Asked Questions

1. How do I arrange for a Science Discovery Program for my class?
The first step is to call Jennifer at (865) 577-4717. At that time you can discuss the program, start times, dates, and fees. Once a date is agreed upon, your school will be tentatively scheduled for that date. You must read and sign the Field Trip Guideline Form before your class program can be confirmed. The form can be found in the forms section below.

2. I've brought my classes in the past; can I expect the same program?
Probably not. Environmental education is a dynamic field, and techniques and methods change regularly. In order to bring each group the latest and most effective programs, we are constantly evaluating programs, responding to feedback from teachers, and learning new activities from industry leaders. We also strive to stay current with grade-specific learning expectations to ensure that we are meeting the needs of east Tennessee teachers. As a result, the program you participate in this month may be different than programs in the past. We think this progressive approach to program development leads to higher quality programs and more meaningful experiences for students and teachers alike.

3. How many chaperones should we bring?
At Ijams Nature Center, we require each group to bring one chaperone per class, in addition to the teacher. Additional chaperones are required to pay the program fee of $5. Also, please note that there is a limit of 20 chaperones per group. This ensures that children are able to fully participate in the program, without distractions. Please visit the Forms section to download a helpful information sheet that you can give to your chaperones.

4. One of my chaperones has a toddler, can she come along?
At Ijams Nature Center, we love toddlers, just not during Science Discovery programs, therefore, no younger siblings are allowed on field trips. Programs are specifically developed to meet the learning abilities and attention spans of the students that attend. It's been our experience that siblings are often a distraction. Also, our education animals are not trained for use with toddlers and infants, and can react negatively to crying, loud talking, and excess movement. We do, however, offer a wonderful program called First Child in the Woods, which is designed specifically for children and their adult partners. Please visit the First Child in the Woods page for more information.

5. Are the trails stroller-friendly?
Most of the trails at Ijams Nature Center are mulched; therefore, strollers are not permitted during Science Discovery programs. Similar to question #3, we have found that infants can be a distraction during school programs. We strive to create a positive learning environment during Life Science Discovery programs, so siblings are not allowed during these programs.

6. What time can I start my program?
Because each school has different bus schedules and class schedules, we find it's easiest to let you decided when your program begins. Most schools opt to begin at 9:30 am, but you can start any time between 9:00 am - 10:00 am. We can also offer an afternoon session that begins between 11:30 am - 12:30 pm. Once you have selected a start time, please plan to arrive on time. We book for morning and afternoon sessions, so arriving late may result in an abbreviated program.

7. Do I bring payment with me to the program?
Payment of program fees is due upon arrival. In special circumstances, invoices can be provided prior to payment; however, these arrangements must be made in advance of the program date.

8. Is there a place for us to picnic at the park?
Yes! Ijams is pleased to offer picnic facilities to school groups that participate in the Life Science Discovery program. Most groups choose to picnic on the front lawn or under the pavilion. Recycling facilities for aluminum, plastic, and paper are available for use; however, each school is responsible for packing up their trash, and taking it back to their school for disposal. We do not have trash facilities for use by school groups.

9. What if it rains on the day of our program?
Programs are conducted rain or shine. Indoor alternatives are available during inclement weather conditions. Due to high demand for field trips, rescheduling may not be possible.

10. Knox County requires a risk assessment form, can you help?
Yes. We can provide a completed risk assessment document that may be submitted for administration approval. Please visit the Forms and Information page.
