Dates: March 18, 2019 – March 22, 2019
Time: 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. each day

Spring Break is always a tricky thing to navigate. While this school holiday typically occurs during the actual season of spring, the weather often still feels like winter! As a result, it is hard to know if kids should be sent outside to play or if they should stay inside by the fire.

Fortunately, Ijams has the perfect solution for what to do with your children during this year’s Spring Break—send them to camp to celebrate both their survival of winter AND the arrival of spring, with the Spring Equinox falling smack in the middle of the week!

Give your children the ultimate Spring Break experience that opens their eyes to the beauty and wonder of the changing seasons. Creatures that have been hiding all winter are now on the move, leaving a trail behind them. New plant life is silently emerging and peeking out around every turn. Spring Break campers will look for early signs of spring and celebrate their own survival of winter by learning the basics of winter survival skills and winter ecology, with an emphasis on how plants, birds, and other animals use their unique adaptations and keen survival skills to endure the harsh conditions of winter months.

The moderate temperatures and early signs of spring make this one of most enjoyable times of year to explore our 315 acres of protected wildlife habitat, trails, scenic overlooks, limestone features, nature playscapes, creeks, Mead’s Quarry and the Tennessee River.

Additionally, campers will enjoy many of the same activities from our Summer Nature Adventure Camps, including:

  • Hiking
  • Rock Scrambling/Bouldering
  • Canoeing
  • Fishing
  • Pond/Creek Exploration
  • Insect Collection
  • Bird Watching (with an emphasis on spring migration!)
  • Plant and Animal Identification
  • Navigation/Orienteering
  • Winter Survival Skills (i.e. fire making, shelter building, etc.)
  • Wilderness Skills
  • Live Animal Presentations
  • Arts and Crafts
  • And more!

*NOTE: Although we try to include all of the above activities in each week of camp, there will be some variation based on weather and other factors.

Staff and Philosophy

As with all Ijams camps, Spring Break Camp is led by an amazing staff that loves to teach and recreate in the outdoors. It is our goal to reconnect children with the natural world, all the while fostering individual confidence, group cooperation, outdoor skills, and environmental responsibility among our campers.

Age and Eligibility Requirements

Ijams Spring Break Camp is open to children ages 6 to 12 years old. While we make every attempt to group campers with other children of similar ages, we cannot guarantee that this will be the case. Depending on enrollment, we may choose to mix age groups in order to build community and encourage mentorship among campers. Camper groupings are always at the discretion of Ijams staff.

In addition to age, registration and attendance for Nature Adventure Camps are based on participants being able to reasonably meet the requirements listed in our Essential Eligibility Criteria.
