Bike With A Naturalist

Bring your bike and get stoked for a naturalist-guided tour of the Will Skelton Greenway! 

Over 2 hours and 7 miles, you'll experience the natural wonders of Knoxville's Will Skelton Greenway by biking through Ijams Nature Center, Island Home Park, and Forks of the River WMA. Through various stopping points, you'll learn the history of Island Home, the Tennessee River, and observe various forms of flora and fauna that call the Greenway home! 

The Route: This program will begin at Ijams Nature Center. The group ride will head east towards Island Home Park along the Will Skelton Greenway, and then head west to Forks of the river WMA before heading back to the starting location. There will be various stopping and resting points.

Mileage: This bike ride will cover 7 miles of the Will Skelton Greenway. While the Greenway is a great escape from cars and other motorized vehicles, there is no escape from the hills of Knoxville! Participants should expect to bike over mildly hilly terrain, at an average pace of 8-10 MPH (a casual, leisurely pace).

Things to Bring: 

1. Your bike! At this time, we unfortunately do not have loaner bikes available.

2. A helmet (this is non-negotiable) 

3. Water & snacks 

4. Layers! With the Autumn comes lots of fun changes, especially in temperature! 

5. Lights and flat-kit! If you have bike lights, please bring them. If not, that's okay! While it shouldn't be dark by the time the program finishes, it's good to be on the safe side. Patches or other tire-repair items are always a good idea, too. 

Ages: This program is designed for ages 16+. All participants under the age of 18 MUST be accompanied by an adult

Location: This program meets at the main Visitor Center of Ijams Nature Center.

Parking: Parking for this Ijams Education Course is free for all participants. Please arrive 5-10 minutes before the course begins to obtain a free parking pass upon check-in. Refund Policy: No walk-ins will be accepted. Every participant must have a ticket. Ijams only awards full refunds for any cancellations up to 7 days before a program, or if Ijams cancels a program due to inclement weather. Refunds are not awarded for programs with fees of $5 or less for any reason. Tickets are non-transferable.
